Underground MC Dru Manchu of Bad Habitat and Surreal Music

Underground MC Dru Manchu of Bad Habitat and Surreal Music

After discovering his inability to sing at a young age, Dru Manchu began dilligently working on his abilites as a rapper. Sharpening his blade as a freestyle artist, Manchu became a staple at house parties and open mics throughout the greater Portland area. After many note worthy battles (including a loss to future World Rap and Scribble Jam champion Illmaculate while the two were in highschool) he decided to switch his focus to legitimate song writing. Underground Hip Hop Group Bad Habitat of Surreal Music

Underground Hip Hop

Bad Habitat of Surreal Music

Bad Habitat is the hip-hop equivalent of The Three Musketeers, with the swagger of a young Rat Pack, and a style all their own. Forming early in the summer of 2008, Dru Manchu, Flawless, and Damian Grey have since stolen hundreds of shows, amassed a loyal fan base, and built a reputation as “One of the most underrated groups in the Portland hip-hop scene…” (Willamette Week). Intent on making intelligent, yet danceable music, Bad Habitat has developed an aggressive, progressive sound that incorporates real life lyricism mixed with over the top braggadocio and an original flavor of beats (primarily provided in-house by members Flawless and Damian Grey).

Underground Hip Hop Artists to look out for in 2010

Bad Habitat

Portland Underground Hip Hop group Bad Habitat is one of the quickest rising hip hop crews in 2010. Members Dru Manchu, Flawless and Damian Grey have been working hard and proving themselves on increasingly larger stages (performing on stages with Slick Rick, Rahzel, The Beatnuts, Canibus, Digital Underground and many more). Emcee Dru Manchu is known for his eloquent word play, intricate rhyme schemes, and sophisticated vocabulary. Expect him to stand out among other up and coming hip hop emcees of 2010. Emcee and Producer Flawless has always been known for his crisp delivery and emphatic stage presence. Less known is his skill as a hip hop producer. His beats have shown great improvement from 2008 to 2009. Expect to hear his beats on more mainstream songs in the future, 2010 is going to be a big year for Flawless Beats. A man of many trades, Damian Grey, is possibly the most valuable member of Bad Habitat coming into 2010. His skills as an emcee and as a producer are at par with the other members of Bad Habitat but his abilities in mixing and mastering put Bad Habitat into contention with some of the best new hip hop artists of 2010.

Surreal Music

Bad Habitat is the front running group of Portland based Independent Hip Hop Record Company Surreal Music. Other members of Surreal Music include Mindskillz, Northorn Lights and Conflic Theory. Mindskillz (Samuel Miller) is the Director of Marketing and Management and excels in the field of internet marketing. Already a major player in Bend Hip Hop, expect to see Northorn Lights' presence grow in the Portland Hip Hop scene during 2010. CT aka Conflic Theory or Confliction is one of Surreal Music's most prolific song writers. With little recordings completed and few appearances in 2008 and 2009 expect for 2010 to be a breakout year for Conflic. With hundreds of songs written in multiple genres (Hip Hop, Spoken Word and Urban Folk) watch for many albums to be released Summer and Fall of 2010. Damian Grey, formerly known as Trafek gained notoriety with Hip Hop group Trash Heap. Now a major player with Surreal Music, Damian will shine in 2010. Flawless, of Bad Habitat, is a steady improving Hip Hop Producer who will most definitely gain a great deal of clout among producers in 2010. Dru Manchu was one of the most stand out indie emcees of 2009. Expect to see him explode in the hip hop game in 2010.

Eternal Family
Eternal Family is one of Portland Hip Hop's fastest rising groups. With performances on some of 2009's biggest Portland Hip Hop events (Breakout Mixtape Jumpoff, POH HOP XI with Zion I and The Jacka)Eternal Family is bound to be an increasingly powerful force in 2010. Members ReyD8, Jusick, Traduce and J Rott are four of Portland's freshest up and coming emcees.

Rodders 10/23/2009

Rodders is a pretty nice sized club located on Molalla in Oregon City that hosts some really great shows. Last Friday was no exception. With performances by Bad Habitat, Rocket One, Lost Soul Surcle and Prologic to name a few, this show popped off with some real hip hop in the northwest. I met a cat outside that was pushing his hip hop movement news letter. I read it the next day and was very impressed with some of the literature. I will be giving him a shout out pretty soon. Bad Habitat rocked it. So did Rocket One. It was all in all a good show. It was my first time catching a show at Rodders and I was not disappointed. The drinks were pretty spendy though. $7 for a well drink in Oregon City? thats crazy
